“By making teachers’ expectations for learning explicit, rubrics help students better assess themselves, become more receptive to feedback, and feel more motivated to learn” (Goodwin & Hubbell, 2013)
“We therefore suggest that autonomy support also facilitates internalization; in fact, i t is the critical element for a regulation being integrated rather than just introjected” (Ryan & Deci, 1999)

Application
The application of rubrics in Ethan's course can be seen in the "Growth Tracking" tab of Ethan's spreadsheet. We worked together to identify specific areas that are helpful in clarifying and visualizing his growth. While we don't necessarily write out the specific rubric values in each class, we do talk about every aspect of the rubric values. This is part of the general conversation at the beginning and end of each class, and is recorded in a personal area of the notes page.
