Item 10:
I help students develop deep knowledge

Supporting Quotes

“The real goal of learning, rather, should be deep knowledge or true understanding - that is, being able to connect ideas, recognize patterns among them, and apply that learning to other contexts and situations.” (Goodwin & Hubbell, 2013)

“ this, in fact, is the essence of intentionality - knowing why we’re doing what we’re doing and having a purpose for everything we do in the classroom”. (Goodwin & Hubbell, 2013)

“At the core of all learning, then, appears to be the process of associating new knowledge with old” (Goodwin & Hubbell, 2013)

“Employability skills refer to the skills that are required, sustaining, and doing well on a job. These skills and characteristics allow graduates too survive together with their colleagues, to create a perilous decision, resolve problems, develop deference, and eventually turn out to be robust representatives designed for the business.” (York, 2006 as quoted in Tang, 2019)

Resources

  •  "Make it Stick: The Science of Successful Learning" by Brown, Roediger, & McDaniel holds many tips and explanations for deep learning and retention. This video on You Tube from the CATIE Center on “Make it Stick” helps explain some of those theories: https://youtu.be/hcyEdtCiDDY

Application

Most students come to my classes believing that reading and re-reading texts is the only/best way to study. A significant portion of my programs is dedicated to executive functioning, exploring many ways to study. When Ethan and I started working together, the 'classic' form of studying was his default. We explored different ways of ensuring he retained necessary and valuable knowledge: flash cards (both physical and online) for vocabulary, online simulations for geometry questions, online videos (YouTube and Khan Academy) for algebra and statics problems, and alternative articles for reading comprehension. These alternative forms of studying are a large part of how Ethan increased his practice score by 150 points so quickly.
