I help students do something with their learning

Supporting Quotes

“In the world beyond school, what often matters most is one’s ability to apply knowledge in thoughtful and creative ways.” (Goodwin & Hubbell, 2013)

“Ultimately, we want students to be prepared to tackle complex problems - from global concerns about energy and the environment to smaller-scale, yet still complex, challenges, such as balancing a household budget against wants and needs” (Goodwin & Hubbell, 2013)

“In mastery classrooms, many learning goals are skills-based. The focus is on supporting students to build durable skills they can use in life after high school”. Nolan, J. (2016). Growing Mastery in NYC. Phi Delta Kappan, 98(3), 41–48.

Application

Student's only truly learn what they want to learn. Ethan wants to be an aerospace engineer. Therefore, we connect lessons as much as possible to this future career. Geometry and algebra problems relate to the shapes of rockets, language arts lessons involve planets and galaxies. Part of developing focus towards the SAT is learning to digest information from non-engaging material, so we do spend time on "archaic language" articles, but Ethan stays focused because he knows we will eventually return to a more applied passage.
